Dingo Vacations

As much as Lupe enjoys exploring the Black Hills of South Dakota with SPHP, there is a big wide world beyond the Black Hills full of exciting scents and scenes very much worth experiencing.  So every now and then, Lupe and SPHP head out on a Dingo Vacation to see the world, or at least a piece of it not normally within reach.

Lupe heads out on her 1st big Dingo Vacation ever (all the way to the Pacific!) in early August 2012. This trip Lanis was with Lupe & SPHP, and she rode in comfort in the back of his Honda Element.

Most Dingo Vacations are very low budget affairs that involve a preponderance of overnight car camping, perhaps a tent if SPHP is lucky enough to come across a dispersed camping site, or on rare occasions a cheap motel, cabin, or a even a stay with friends or relatives in the lap of luxury.

As a little puppy, Lupe was terrified of riding in the car.  Her first car ride was one dark cold February night when she was placed in a cage and taken away from her mother and brothers and sisters at two months old.  However, Lupe eventually outgrew her fear once she figured out that a ride in the car wasn’t always going to be scary.

In fact, Lupe came to realize that a ride in the G6 almost always meant something fun was going to happen.  Lupe loves to ride now.  Not many things can beat hanging your head out the window with the wind in your face, while you cruise effortlessly along faster than any Dingo could possibly run!

Lupe gets excited and knows when a car ride is going to be the start of a Dingo Vacation.  SPHP fills the passenger side front seat of the G6 with stuff needed for the trip, and piles on a bunch of soft pillows and blankets for Lupe to lay on.  The result is that Lupe rides shotgun up even with the dash so she can see out the windows.  The passenger side window gets partially rolled down so she can stick her nose out to sniff the air any time she chooses.

Once under way, Lupe is bright and alert, for she has important and exciting duties.  She keeps watch for anything that might possibly be a horse, cow, or deer to bark at.  Haystacks look suspicious and get barked at, too.  Barns and other outbuildings smell suspicious.  Lupe knows there must be a cow or two hiding around there somewhere.  For Lupe, riding in the G6 can be an exhausting experience.  700 miles of frenzied barking across Montana is no easy chore!

Often SPHP likes to take unfamiliar back roads, just to see what is out there.  So Lupe gets to visit some out of the way places.  In general, if not heading to see relatives, the goal is to see and experience the beautiful rivers and streams, mountains, forests, lakes, prairies, hills, valleys and ridges of the natural world.  Lupe has even made it to the Pacific Ocean.

Of course, most of the time is not spent driving.  (That costs money!)  Mostly a Dingo Vacation involves lots of hikes and exploring, tons of sniffing, plenty of barking and running around, high hopes that there will be a squirrel in the very next tree, and best of all just being together outdoors doing things Lupe and SPHP both love.  At times Dingo Vacations can be short on comforts, but Lupe and SPHP are still having the time of their lives.

  1. I love seeing an ascent by Lupe! when I research a peak on Peakbagger. I’ve read reports when I lived in Washington State and now in Alaska. The reports are well written and the pics are perfectly timed along the trail. Thank you for sharing and I look forward to reading more adventures in the days/weeks/months/years to come!!

    1. Thank you for the praise Bryan! I thrive on it! And lucky you, living in Alaska now! SPHP read with interest your recent trip report about South Suicide Peak. SPHP recently broke a trekking pole, and it seems there is a free set up there now!
